Singapore's Desserts

Nendoroid Saturday outing

Nendoroids Rin and Kagami were working hard today, though it was really just Rin doing all the work. They decided to help comrade Maverick give out post-it pads for this Japanese language school today since they had some free time on their hands. It was tiring but overall a fun time since it was awesome to see the faces of the people when I held this sign up with Rin and beckoned them to take the free post-it pads.

Nendoroid Saturday outing

I arrived in the afternoon and comrades Maverick and Waltz had already distributed half of the post-it pads by then.
We had our lunch at KFC. Don’t know if you have at KFC in your part of the woods but Rin loves it, especially the Zinger burger.

After lunch they resumed their distribution, but this time with the help of Rin. Kagami was too lazy to help. Coincidentally, it was the annual PC show fair in town, so the place was extremely crowded. Just look at the human packed bus stop in the picture above.

Nendoroid Saturday outing

I followed comrade Maverick who stationed himself strategically at one of the overhead bridges leading to the PC show. The human traffic was good here.

I am sad to say I do not have any pictures of how ridiculous I look when I held Rin and a sign up while offering the post it pads to people. But I’ll supply you with the sign, Rin and the post it pads and leave it up to your imagination. I can tell you that I had a huge amount of suprised, shocked, disgusted, quizzical faces when the people saw Rin. If i had more hands I’d have taken so many shots of the people. Singapore’s society just isn’t used to such things ^^

After distrubuting everything we left the crowded Suntec and headed off to reward ourselves and the Nendoroids with some good food. Here are some interesting pictures before we left the place

I thought this was GSC (Good Smile Company)

On the way to the way to dessert land, I saw this officer giving a ticket to a car who probably did not put a parking coupon. In Singapore, we have very very strict traffic laws and you can easily get fined for illegally parking. Yes, the system is that Nazi. They have officers like this working round the clock giving out tickets ^^

And one last shot before we move on to food. This is Bugis street. You can see the contrasting differences of Singapore’s architecture; the old and the new. The government preserves old shop houses like these, and they are a common sight and a tourist attraction. The tall skyscrapers is Suntec, which was the place where conventions are held in Singapore (also the place where we gave out the freebies).

Nendoroid Saturday outing

Right, so Kagami is going to introduce the first dessert of the day; Qing Chao
It is called grass jelly if my memory serves me right. It is basically a very sweet and cooling jelly drink served with generous proportions of ice. You can also drink it like a beverage without the jelly. It is extremely refreshing and cooling in the tropical heat.

Don’t ask me why it’s called grass jelly. I doubt there is anything grassy inside, and the only black dark colored grass I know are those that have animal poo on it. It’s probably a Chinese thing.

Nendoroid Saturday outing

Rin gets excited over food as usual and demands a few mouths of jelly!

Nendoroid Saturday outing
“You greedy monster!”
*pokes*

I can only say “awwwww”

The next thing is called the you tiao. There’s actually a longer Chinese name for it called you zha gui. It’s basically a flour pastry deep fried in oil. They usually come in pairs and despite looking very big and thick, it’s actually hollow inside

Nendoroid Saturday outing

The container underneath the you tiao is a bowl of cold tau hui. Tau hui is one of my most favourite desserts. It is a soya milk dessert, also known as beancurd. Very sweet and tasty.

Say “ahhhhh”

Kagami loves it!

If you ever come to Singapore, you got to try these delicious delights, these are only a small fraction the stuff we have here. If the Nendos love them, you got to try them ^^

Very cute pictures of the nendo eating them ^_^]]>

< ![CDATA[Hello! First time visitor here. I was directed to this blog from another website and, I must say, you have a lot of impressive Nendoroid photos on here. Looks like I have a new favorite blog ^_^.

To be honest, a lot of those desserts don't look like desserts to me. I wouldn't have known if they were if you didn't say so. They all look tasty, though. I love the picture of KagaMiku poking Rin.

Btw, we do have KFC here in America (of course! that's where it's from!), but we don't have that Zinger Burger that Rin was gawking over.]]>

< ![CDATA[Haha, that's probably because all these Chinese desserts have really weird sounding names to foreigners.

But that doesn't matter. All that matters is the awesome taste and feeling when you put them in your mouth! ^^]]>

< ![CDATA[Hmm, to put it into words is rather difficult.

I would say it's a cooling sweet sensation when you put it in your mouth. It’s not VERY sweet like those fruity kind. Just mild sweetness so it’s very refreshing.

When I was young I did not want to taste it because of it being dark colored, but when I tried it later when I grew up, I instantly fell in love with it]]>

< ![CDATA[Glad you enjoy the stories!

And yeah, Asian desserts really look weird to Westerners! Our desserts look weird but they are usually cooling, refreshing and sweet. Perfect for the heat that we get.

Not only KFC, I'm sure our Mcdonalds are very different from yours. I heard that the burgers that we have are very small compared to those from the States!]]>
