Concrete Garden

In Singapore, almost everyone lives in multistory apartments. As such, greenery is lacking. However, some residents would take it upon themselves to have their own garden along the corridors, one such person who blocks the corridor with her plants would be my mother.

Concrete Garden

Mum grows all sorts of flowers and plants. She really likes gardening and she claims that talking to plants while watering them makes them grow better.

Concrete Garden

I talk to my nendoroids everyday but they don’t seem to grow at all. Maybe I need to speak in Japanese?

Concrete Garden

The plants which is grown makes for very interesting pictures. The things which we take for granted everyday is usually very good stuff for pictures.

Concrete Garden

This plant has very interesting leaves. Does the dark green parts have more chlorophyll and hence make more starch? If so then why only those parts are dark green?

Concrete Garden

What were these again? Hibiscus right? I remember asking this question a very long time ago. Was figuring out who to pose with them purple flowers and figured out I probably need a Zange.

Concrete Garden

Gardening is dirty business, so is putting my little daughters on the soil.

Concrete Garden

Yellow flowers, belonging to my neighbour’s garden. The lady next door grows more flowers as compared to my mum. The header picture of Rin against white flowers also belongs to her garden.

Concrete Garden

Spot the Rin.

It’s good that there are these concrete gardens in the concrete jungle of Singapore. I’d die if I don’t see greenery. Do you have a garden with nice plants too?

Nice pictures as usual – and beautiful plants!
I especially love that black and white picture with Rin. It’s so different than the other ones you’ve taken, and greyscaling it really brings it to life. It looks really nice.~

As for plants growing by speaking to them – it’s a proven fact, since your breath gives them what they need to continue to grow. =)

These are like, right outside your house or something, aren’t they? It’s interesting how “most of Singapore” looks like this in terms of housing. :P

In this case, the different colors of green aren’t a sign of phosphorus deficiency (usually the leaves turn darker and withered-looking at the edges or along the veins). That plant is a wild-type prayer plant and they naturally have the darker pattern. They’re tolerable of low light conditions and I believe that the variation in color allows the plant to absorb a greater range of the spectrum. I had one of these in the rainforest terrarium I designed for a local school which is why I recognize it ^^

It looks like Singapore is an amazing place to grow plants, despite the concrete. I have a garden but it tends to be covered by snow for about half the year >.< All those tropical plants your mom has outside are considered house plants where I live. Jealous~

Thanks for the information! I guess the grass is always greener on the other side. We don’t have snow at all here ):
