Amongst all my figures, my most favourite is Drossel. I’m sure many people know that. Why I like her the best is a mix of posing ability and the ability to look good in almost every background and setting. Credit to her for making me change my perspective of the figma line. It’s always been a fun process taking shots of Drossel anywhere, anytime.
Despite taking so many Drossel picture, I’ve never gotten bored of her. Though there are times where I end up reusing a certain pose and angle. I blame that fault for my pickiness in only shooting Drossel in a certain angle. Can you guess what angle? It isn’t hard ^^
Her eyes exudes a certain kind of charm which I always find mesmerising in any shot. Not to mention my weakness to twintails, she’s just a robot wonder.
I’ve probably exhausted most of the poses and angles of shooting Drossel that I like so I’ve decided to take some unconventional shots. Trying to apply these kind of interesting angles which defy my conception of a nice composed picture. I think this picture above is my first half portrait picture. I love the effect, don’t really care if you don’t ^^. Always thought that all pictures must contain the full face of the subject, but you really don’t. Gives much character to the picture if you ask me, though to each his/her own preference.
Breaking the conventions of photography with Drossel is extremely fun too. I love portraits too and Drossel looks great in them. Truth be told, I feel that majority of my shots, though clear, are pretty uninspiring. The angles are ‘easy’ and ‘straightforward’ which any trained monkey can do.
To me the toughest thing about taking pictures is making the figure come alive, like a human. Always wanted to portray the life-ness of figures. To me, figure are larger than life. Which is my concept of figure photography! Thinking out of the box is the most important thing to get an interesting composition. I don’t really bother about noisy pictures, composition is the most important in my books. Which is why I enjoy taking shoot in the outdoors so much. The surrounding are your tools and you have an infinite number of tools.
While some may argue, I think taking lots of pictures helps. Firstly you know how to work your camera and you will instinctively know what looks good when you take enough pictures of something. And when in doubt, shoot first, think later. Normally you’ll sub-consciously start taking from an angle which you find is the best. And that’s what I do most of the time. Just shoot, think later. Awkward angles are the best ^^!
While I may not produce the most prettiest pictures, these are my personal thoughts and critiques of my own style. Speaking about style. everyone has their own style when it comes to taking pictures. Finding your own is probably the best. Style is a vague term too, I don’t know how to define it. I guess it covers from how you take to what you take and why you take. How did I find my ‘style’? Simple. Know what I love to take, which in this case is figures, and take them from the angle which I think is the best so you can show what you think is best to others.
Most importantly, enjoy what you do.
While the list of tips and comment I want to make can go on and on, there are a few things I would like to point out. Pictures transcends language which is why I feel that they are the best medium to convey your thoughts. Take the above pic for example. This is a sunset. I don’t have to know how to know how to type sunset in 129301 languages. Anyone from any part of the world who has see a sunset would be able to identify with it immediately.
Hope you enjoyed reading this article brought to you by Drossel. The pictures were taken on a late sunny afternoon to experiment on new angles and styles, Which is why the pictures look a little different from my normal shots. Taken on manual focus which is just so fun, and my retired 18-55mm lens on my awesome D40. Loving Drossel so much.

wooots! do wana see those lenses the next time we meet!
I think it’s the same as Dcal-san!
it seems that Drossel has being through a lot with u. can see the marks on her.
Want to see more marks?
Hahah orig “Battle scars”
I feel it… I feel the cosmos…
I know what you mean – thanks for sharing your thoughts.
Oh btw, direct sunlight like that can damage your lens – do be careful!
Lens care and protection is not my forte! Tell me more. Does the UV filter help?
nice post full of thoughts!
I have not really found my own style in life, let alone photography ^^; I’d say yea, I like to take figs.. but beyond that… I duno :3c
Thoughts are secondary. Drossel is primary!
“Shoot first, think later”
That’s something I cannot do with my blackbird, fly though. LOL
But enjoy what you do…now that’s something that sets me thinking.
Some people just have the talent while some don’t. If you have the ‘eyes’, then you can do well in photography. “Shoot first, think later” sounds easy enough but if the execution sucks, the pix will still sucks.
that is just my opinion. Hope to achieve the ‘eyes’ one day through hard work and dedication.
Your emphasis of eyes brings back the story of the Uchiha clan (Naruto)
I find that when I take photos the first buncha pix will usually feel kinda stiff or Meh
eventually will warm up a bit and the pictures will feel a bit more natural ^^
That is totally the same thing here ^^!
I have not exploited Drossel to many different poses yet. s: ..
Oh and, I’m also very fond of half portraits! I used to do that a lot.
Q___Q i never thought of that~~~ u thought a lot….
i like to take figure shoot ^^ but the lack of moral to bring out my figure for outdoor shooting are one of my biggest obstacle for doing so~~
But seriously.. u do a pretty damn nice shoot on ur figure event tough ur using the same pose, but the environment are different, tough making it interesting ^^
Drossel really got ALOT of “Battle scars” (mine still in box.. lolz)
Really? Battle scars obvious? O_o
