It all starts with sleeping before 12am and waking up at 5.30am. I usually turn in at 10.30pm though.
More appropriately, setting the alarm to sound at 5.30am and then snoozing back into bed.
After the snoozing period is over, I just lie on my bed and open my eyes simply because the other parts of the body are still sleeping.
Once I pull myself out of the bed, I double check the phone (which happens to be my alarm), to ensure that the alarm did not sound off an hour early. Though I’m always hoping that it did so that I’d have an excuse to pop back to dreamland.
Instead of washing up, I check up the RSS reader to check if anything such as World War III occurred while I was asleep. Not to mention reading the news means that I still get to sit on the bed. The whole aim is to spend as much time on the bed as possible.
Only, when the reading of interesting bits of news is done do I drag myself to do the overratted morning stuff.
Breakfast next. Always ham or kaya toast with tea. I cannot live without tea. What is Kaya toast? Will have a separate post on that next time.
After breakfast, it’s back to the room to pack my bag for sch. As logical as it is, I never pack my bag the night before. I’ve no idea why even though it’s logical to do it so that I can squeeze in more sleep. It’s one of those “I know it’s good for me, but I’m not going to do it” things. This is actually one of the most time consuming part because I always fail to find something such as my wallet or keys.
I head out of the house after the bag is ready. From the time the alarm rings, to the time I leave the house, it takes a 45minutes. I do this for every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday when I have school. I actually don’t have to wake up so early, but I always leave the house early and reach campus an hour before lecture starts so that I beat the morning rush hour.
We humans are creatures of habit. We get easily comfortable when we do things over and over again. Once we are so used to doing the same things, it becomes easier for us to do it the next time – or so it seems. During my earlier schooling days, despite having to wake up at 6am in the morning, I never could get used to doing it easily. In fact, now that I look back, I’m pretty amazed that I survived those years.
As much as I hate to admit it, I love routines. It feels correct to just follow the sequence of what I do everyday. You get this feeling that nothing can possibly go wrong, if anything does, it probably would be due to extrinsic factors. Unless you are not human or have highly developed willpower, I’m sure you feel the same. The “I” is always telling “me” to break the daily routines for various reasons, the most valid argument is that sinking deep into routines kills off creativity and the willingness to try out new things or to think out of the box. But unfortunately, my “me” is stronger than my “I” and I get lazy most of the time to try out new things. Nonetheless, I still attempt some new things every now and then including reading stuff I’ll avoid normally or trying out routes I’ll never take. Some of the things I’d hope to try in the future is only possible if I pluck up enough courage to do. Half the time, execution is just the final barrier which I fail to cross.
Anyway I’ve digressed enough, what have you done to day to break your routine?

woah, thats quite a really organised routine! ^^;
thinking abt it… I don’t think I have an exact routine, probably due to my lessons mostly starting at different times each day. I think I also like to try different things, different breakfast, different routes etc. and find a fav one ^^
really love the potrayal of rin! where did the table filled with notes come from?
It’s quite paradoxical since you try out different things to find a favourite one. The whole purpose to find a favourite one is to make it into a routine at the end of the day. We humans are pretty cute.
Table is found in Daiso. Was supposed to have a post about it many moons ago (got it way before my guest set). It was a gift from comrade MavericK during his room clean-up.
Even though i found a fav one, i wont stick to it, i cant do same thing all the time cos i’ll get sick of it.. So usually i have a lot of favs ^^; yep, humans r cute….
I do have a particular routine in mind, but my laziness always overcomes the willpower to execute my plans.
However, I think I do have a “routine”, since I’m almost doing the same stuff everyday. Except for some extra bits here and there.
Have been thinking of where to get the willpower to overcome my laziness, so that I can achieve more things with time to come. Instead of just staring into space and idling around.
Anyway! You sleep on that kind of bed? The one Rin is using to sleep. =P
A lot of mis-conception that doing the same thing means doing a routine. However one needs to consciously remind oneself that it’s how task X is being done that is the crux of ‘breaking routine’
“I go to work/sch everyday, but today I am doing to take the longer route” – That is breaking routine in my books.
I sleep on a sofa bed – http://www.kodomut.com/2009/06/08/nendoroids-and-a-bed/
I think I have more of habits than having a routine.
Having multiple habits =/= A routine, right? @_@
rin is cute!
Breaking routine is very hard, everyday wake up at 8am, go to work, go back around 9pm, surf the net, sleep at around 12.
can only be free on weekend ^_^
It is hard indeed! Our culture is one that especially reinforces routine. Just think, since school, we have been put into one. So used to being placed in that comfort zone that we arent encouraged to be different and try new things.
I do not use my Desktop after i wake-up =/
All news will have to wait till i setup my lappie in sch.
Seems like many people use their phone as the alarm too! looking good! im not alone!! @_@;
Your routine sounds very similar to mine XD
I have to be organized and plan everything otherwise i’ll be late D:
Haha, actually this routine did not come up from many nights of organisation and planning. It is what I find the best order of things to do after trying out many different combinations. I used to brush teeth, cook then read news first, but it required too much walking around the house ^^
So funny !
PS : sorry for the small comment, but my english is really poor ^^”
No worries, there’s always google translator!
Nice idea ^^
Well I go to sleep at 11 pm. In the first years of school until 9th class I could not sleep until it gets 12am. I don’t know why.
Wake up is at 5am. Because I have to take the one bus earlier to make it right on time for the work. But before leaving the house at 5:55am, I open my PC, checking for new Mails, check Twitter and surf around some pages. Sometimes put new Music for my iPhone too.
Of course I’m deadly asleep as hell and my eyes are only at 20% open.
But over the years I get used to it. Somehow. And only some days.
And yeah: Work/School start at 7:30am.
I want a car and a driver license!
And yeah: I do not eat something in the morning.
First there is no time and I can’t eat anything at thise time.
This probably applies more to you since you just gotten your 500D, getting a camera was one of the things that changed me, I looked at things more closely, and I would prefer to take longer routes to destinations nowadays!
My routes are long enough! But I think I have to take the cam with me more. But somehow I feel unpleased if I take photos of something. Like “What do this pervert here” xD
I think everyone have this feeling at the start.
Routines are both good and bad. They allow us to quickly go through mundane operations on a daily basis but they can also make us oblivious to change and reluctant to try new things. Forcing one’s self out of a routine is a difficult endeavor >_<
We just need to come up with a scientific replacement for sleep
Everything we do is based around day/night, awake/sleep. Maybe then we'd have less reliance on monotonous routines ^^.
Indeed we do, sleep is overratted.
It’s pretty obvious – to break my regular routine, I come to kodomut.com!
Rin brushing her teeth is awesome.
Means kodomut.com isn’t in your regular routine XD?
Anyway, I love that pic too. The angle was quite hard to spot, but honestly, I don’t use the mirror. My eyes are closed when I brush my teeth ^^
My routine is wake up at 4:30, keep on hitting snooze untill 5, take a shower, eat, then go leave for seminary. once that’s done, go to school at 7:00, then run school store until 7:30. class starts at 7:38, and ends at 3:01, then have tennis practice until 5:30. after eating, I’ll skip homework and surf my blogroll, look at sales on diferent japan-crazed sites, then quickly finish my homework to go to bed
exept that I’ve been home this past week, because my family might have swine flu.
^that’s an easy way to break a habit^
Waking up at 4:30 is pretty much considered as being crazy in Singapore. What is the average sleeping time over at your part of the woods?
(take care with that swine flu thing going around)
Wehh, you transformed youself into Rin? Or does she just have the same routine?^^
My routine since 5 months is:
Waking up between 09:00-11:15, catching up on some news & checking out if there are any new job offers. Having lunch at around 12:00. On the afternoon random browsing, animu watching, playing with my Nendos and what not.
~17:30 dinner, after that the same stuff as on the afternoon. (^^;) Hitting the shower around 22:00-23:00 and continuing with the task from before until ~ 03:00 on the next day. Awesome, eh?
If the routine isn’t working out, then maybe it’s time to break out of the comfort zone and try something new?
Yeah, I’m pretty much a slave to routine; its not pretty >_>
That said however, mad props for being able to wake up at 5:30, that’s impressive!
Sleeping early does the trick. Though there are people I know who are advocates of the “it’s not how long you sleep but what time you wake up” theory.
“I check up the RSS reader to check if anything such as World War III occurred”
Good man, checking to make sure that Britania hasn’t taken over the world, yet.
http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_vx0Gu7pPdqo/SsF3hD9OMdI/AAAAAAAACIY/WraIXVQ21iU/s1600-h/Gunkoma+A+henshin.bmp Shooting your clock means you just killed your routine^^
I sleep after I woke up to do my daily morning routine. It is something that I don’t usually do but I think sleep is finally catching up to me (didn’t sleep much at all since last month due to absurd amount of work). My usual sleep pattern is 2am – 6am.
I have a routine for the days I have work… albeit not a very long one. It only takes me 20 minutes from the time I get out of bed to the time I’m out the door. I get up, eat, brush my teeth, brush my hair, get my clothes on, and I’m out the door. I don’t get online or anything for fear of procrastination (which I’m absolutely terrible at… I procrastinate with absolutely everything ). It’s a dash from one thing to another to another, because as soon as I stop or sit down for a moment, I know my boss won’t be happy…
My alarms have to be going off for an hour before I get up, though… I’m not a morning person. I have to set two alarms on my phone and one on my normal alarm clock (one for an hour before, one for a half hour before, and one right when I’m supposed to get up ). I’d be scared to try to wake up with only one alarm on. =q=
Just wait till you start working … sianz
wow that’s really a good routine .
when you said that you get sleep before 12 and wake up at 5.30 , and i compare it to my routine i feel that my routine is really bad hahaha.
i sleep at 2 am and woke up at 6 am( if i have to go to campus ) , if i don’t have to go to campus i think i will sleep at 4 am and woke up at 12 pm LOL
btw i always like your photos , and i think i will buy some nendoroid because of you ( even , it is tough to buy it in my place>.<)
Routines are a good thing to follow in my opinion. As long as it’s a productive one.
I can easily break my routines and sometimes do simply by spending time surfing the net doing random stuff. Sigh, the internet…
Indeed, aren’t routines used for productivity and efficiency as stated by the gurus of scientific management during the industrial age? Unfortunately it kills creativity ):
I always have to pack my bag the night before… if I don’t, I worry that I’ll forget something the following morning.
Rin looks very surprised or shocked looking at the RSS reader with her pigtails flying sideways! =P Maybe there really were WW3 alerts that morning?
i took 2 naps instead of one ^_^;
we should dedicate a certain time of our routine to improve creativity as well (surf net and read books help). Routine is definitely powerful, it is up to us what we want to include into the “routine”.
eventually a person might get sick of routine, especially those who are working. when the time comes, we will change our routine and explore new things
. however, i admit i’m lazy~~ XD
