A common misconception is that I’m a super Otaku. I’m as average as an average Joe can be actually. During my teenage years I did have an interest in anime and such, but not as fervent as some might think. I grew up watching lots of TV, not anime but the likes of Discovery Channel and National Geographic and Animal Planet.
Until today, I’d rather watch documentaries and read stuff than watch backlogged anime. How geek can one be?
My dad has been on the National Geographic subscription for a few years already – since 1997 to be exact. Initially I never took much interest in reading that magazine, instead I opted to read Readers’ Digest at that time because it was probably easier to understand.
However, over the years I’ve grown to appreciate the informative articles which are found in every issue. I still don’t read every single article though, just the ones that interest me, mainly history, religion and culture. I do skip articles pertaining to environment and wildlife sometimes even though I find the pictures of those articles the most amazing of the lot.
Speaking of pictures, National Geographic features pictures which are truly stunning. From wildlife, amazing landscapes and stunning portraits, every picture is rich and colorful. If I could be a photographer for National Geographic, I’d jump at it. A chance to travel the world and experience different cultures? Why not.
I particularly love Egyptian history articles, they never seem to be exhausted; Both on the magazine and on documentaries. Archeologist and historians can never get enough of the 4th dynasty.
The best section of the magazine is this one which is found at the front, right after the editor’s note and letters. Shows you a side of the world most of us would never get to experience since we are stuck in our home.
National Geographic goes beyond being just an informative magazine. It’s an effort to spread awareness for environmental conservation, exploration and education. You’ll probably remember and learn more from reading Nat Geo than going to school and getting out of it.
Visit the National Geographic site here for more information on the magazine and the organisation.
This post is brought to you be sweet Yutaka, I can’t remember where I threw Konata’s head.

I used to be subscribed to National Geographic, but my mum stopped :/
Used to have a healthy supply of them too but… since wikipedia came along…
That’s like replacing shoes with socks.
ha ha ha that’s so true.

A year’s subscription is less than a scaled figure.
I grew up with Animal books, Discovery Channel and National Geographic when I was very small xD
after that it’s manga and anime
anime or documentaries and stuff… I’d say their both geek ^^;
Definition of what you grew up with is what influenced you the most during your formative years. I watched lots of Marvel and DC cartoons and what not over the TV at the same time period, yet no matter how hyped up I was, it was never impressionable.
I used to read them back in elementary, so that’s probably why I have such a keen interest in geography nowadays. I don’t really read much nowadays though, although the same could be said about anime watching.
It’s all about priorities, anime watching takes the bottom position.
I love watching National Geography channel also due to the information and history programs.
All part of L.L.L.
What is L.L.L??
Life Long Learning.
The only reason I bought National Geography is the pictures. They never ceased to amaze me.
Yup, some of them are just beyond amazing.
Heheh, I remember reading a lot of National Geog. magazines back in school; have to admit I haven’t picked one up in ages though -_-;
My family used to have a subscription to the magazine a long time ago. I remember having a storage room just stacked with these magazines. I really wonder what happened to them all. Even when I was too young to read and comprehend the magazines I was looking at their pictures, they’ve always had amazing photographers and impressive scenes. I too would love to be a photographer for National Geographic, I’m just not anywhere skilled enough to do so. I’m envious of those who get to travel the world to take pictures and tell stories, it seems like an amazing job.

The photos in National Geographic are always so stunning. Used to love going to the NUS library to read the latest issue, and kept thinking back then whether it would be possible to work for them. LOL
Those are world class professionals. “Amazing” is not enough to describe their photos.
@alafista: If you are equipped with photography / production skills, you can try to apply. else u can ask National Graphic store in Vivo city
.
If you like National Geographic and Discovery Channel, you really need to check out BBC Natural History. Planet Earth, Wild China, all of it is incredible.
i used to enjoy watching National Geographic and Discovery Channel, they always kept my attention and were very informative and fascinating. however i havent had cable for the longest time so ive been missing out.
Yeah I also just watch NatGeo, Discovery, history channel and animal planet than those non-sensical dramas that most people watch. And I haet tagalog movies and series which lead the failure to pass my Filipino subject during college years.lol.
I used to read National Geographic a lot when I was younger. I just somewhat recently subscribed to it, but haven’t gotten around to reading them.
The magazines are starting to pile up. =/
I dont subscribe but i buy em as much as possible lol the pictures inside captures me alot! But the Discovery channel’s magazine aint that bad too
Ahhh~ I love Discovery Channel, National Geographic and Animal Planet too. Somehow i find them more enjoyable than those local drama nowadays. = = I still watch all these online whenever i am free. It’s very interesting to watch them. Learning stuff that i do not know in the past.
I didn’t get any of the magazine though. Whenever i try to read those, i will be very tired. =X Unless it’s in Chinese. LOL.
I can’t get those magz much around here…
Subscription here take even more than you buy the whole year edition…
That’s why I’d rather wait for some of them to arrive in the nearby bookstore than subscribing XD
Ah, yes, speaking of what you’ve watched, what kind of knowledge got cery attached to your memory?
Mine’s the animal knowledge XD
*very
