New card. Yay. :3

Verstehen

Hey you Otaku. You are one weirdo. Why are you so obsessed over that crappy card. Go find a true hobby!

Verstehen

I think the card is pretty though!

Verstehen

You and your weird friends should just live in a cave far far away from civilization. We have no need outcasts like you in society.

Verstehen

D1: According to our observations, this is a fine example of verstehen not being exercised.

D2: Verstehen in a nutshell, means having social empathy, which is to place one in another shoes to understand them.
Maritan jumps into the conclusion that Otakus are socially aloof people and starts an array of degrading insults.

D1: When complaining or when faced with a culture which humans do not understand, they need to refrain from judging the book by it’s cover and seek to understand the deeper mechanics on why people have their set of tastes and preferences – even if they don’t like it. Unfortunately easier said than done.

Verstehen

Humans love to judge quickly and thus they always end up fighting, and in this case, Shana just reinforces the stereotype that Otakus go to great extremes like stabbing and house burning, which in fact is a small small percentage but the mass media reports such things with such zeal that people think that that is the norm.

Verstehen

D1: A fine example of self-fulfilling prophecy.

D2: Humans are truly intriguing.

Verstehen

Another Otaku stabbing hits the headlines. These guys give a bad name!

For more information on verstehen, do a google search on that term. Just learned it today and it’s a sociology term made popular by Marx Weber and his Weberian theories. It is to put away your own perspective shaped by your values, culture and what not to understand an entirely different culture. Take for example, I hate moe, but I need to be objective if I am going to do a study about moe. Can’t let your own prejudices take over your study, and I need to put myself in a moe-fan’s shoes to understand why it’s sooooooo captivating. Verstehen and empathy, an easy concept but not one easy to apply – won’t you agree?

        Didn’t you mean Max Weber? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Max_Weber ?

“Verstehen” means nothing more than understanding btw. Didn’t know that it is associated with a theory in English.

Shana was a bad example, I guess. Way too tsuntsun ^_^

What? You’re telling me not to judge people based on my own preconceived notions of them? What kind of communist propaganda is this!?

    • Kodomut
      Kodomut10-14-2009

Don’t think this can be considered communist ^^

More like an analytical study of social sciences!

pfft, verstehen smechtshen. I don’t give a shit. If people don’t understand what the others are doing, just sit in a corner and lament about it!

    • kodomut

If everyone did that that we wouldn’t solve any problem.

You know I still can’t grabs MOE. I heard snark talk about it but I still don’t get it but I am okay with it. Not everything in life you have to understand.

    • kodomut
      kodomut10-15-2009

Don’t have to understand everything, but the moment you don’t try, you stop learning. If someone pisses you off and you don’t try to figure out why someone does something and wonder what is the catalyst and motive behind it, you are already adopting a 1 sided perspective.

When an otaku does something bad, people report like mad. When an otaku does something good, people keep quiet.
People just chose to look from the bad perspective so that they can go around and gossip. =P

Ob du diesen Text auch auf Deutsch verstehen würdest, bezweifle ich.

Well, yeah verstehen is German XD

But your actually right. That#s one of those reasons that I don’t say everyone “Hey, I like Anime and I’m an Otaku!”

The translation of I have said is btw:
I’m not sure if you can understand this in German.

Something like that. My English lacks too xD

Great comic strip as always, Kodomut-san! Really like how you choose poses to express character’s emotions in each situation. Btw do you use some kind of macro lens for your sessions?

    • kodomut
      kodomut10-16-2009

I wish I could afford one. Maybe I’ll grab a macro conversion in the near future, but no I don’t have macro lens at the moment.

      I use a 50mm f1/8 most for my shots!

Yeah, I tend to not see a lot of verstehen at work… thus why I grow apathetic. Everyone’s talking behind each other’s backs and I get critical too. It really sucks. I can’t say much about the otakuism here… I don’t experience a lot of negative feedback about me being one living here.
